NHS GP & Dentist Finder
Your GP registration rights as a newcomer, plus links to NHS's own live GP and dentist search.
- You do not need a fixed address — you can register using a temporary address, or the GP surgery's own address if you have nowhere else.
- You do not need to show ID, proof of address, or proof of immigration status. Practices have no contractual duty to ask for this, and cannot lawfully refuse you for not having it.
- Immigration status makes no difference — anyone in the UK can register with a GP and get NHS primary care free of charge.
- You can self-refer directly — no referral or existing NHS number is needed to register.
If a practice does turn you away for any of the above reasons, that's against NHS England guidance — you can ask to speak to the practice manager, or contact your local Integrated Care Board (ICB) to raise it.
Search by postcode on the NHS's own live directory — this shows current practices near you with contact details.
Find a GP near you →The NHS's live dentist search shows whether a practice is currently accepting new NHS patients, and when that status was last updated.
Find an NHS dentist →Be realistic about NHS dental access — in much of the country very few or no practices are accepting new NHS patients, and waits can be long even where they are. If you can't find one nearby, it's worth checking neighbouring towns or asking your GP practice for advice on urgent dental problems.
MyJapaUK links directly to the NHS's own live search tools rather than keeping our own list — GP and dentist availability changes constantly, and only NHS's own system can be relied on to stay accurate. This page covers England; registration rules can differ slightly in Scotland, Wales and Northern Ireland.
